Back2School: Getting the Kids Excited about Exercise


As you get the kids back into their routine, experts say it's a good time to think about fitness.

Local non-profit Live 54218 has tips to inspire the kids to get exercise.

They say step one to get your kids hearts pumping is having them walk or bike to school.

If traffic is a concern, drop them off at a safe place a few blocks from school and let them walk the rest of the way.

After school, keep your kids moving with structured programs at the YMCA or the Boys and Girls Club.

Encourage them to have fun and play.

"Think about when you were a kid what you liked to do and what was fun, and it usually involves physical activity and do that with your kids," says Jen Van Den Elzen, Live 54218

Recess is one of those built-in exercise times during the school day, but sometimes the kids end up standing around and talking.

Live 54218 encourages schools to make sports equipment available at recess.

"They have to make sure that their noon supervisors are engaging the children and helping them be active, playing with them and encouraging them," says Van Den Elzen. "'Well don't just stand there. Lets come and be active.'"

She says parents need to instill in their children early on the importance and value of physical activity.

"So if you maybe play catch at home with your son or daughter the night before, the next day they're in recess they might be pretty excited to show that new game or school to their friends," says Van Den Elzen.
