Green Bay -

The start of a new school year is a new beginning for the Leonardo da Vinci school for gifted learners.

Using the foundation of a historic cathedral school, a new school year brings a new home for the school in downtown Green Bay.

"It's nice to have our own location, we were in another school for last two years, so that was difficult for both schools and now we have our own site and also we are located downtown which we think is so exciting because there are so many opportunities for us here," said Principal Tammy Van Dyke.

Soon the hallways in their new building will be full of students, so the faculty knows they need to be ready for the start of school.

"We were first able to move into our building last week, so staff has been here pretty much, I hate to say it, but the staff has been here pretty much 24/7 so they've been here a lot, Friday, Saturday's Sunday's, and they're here today," said Van Dyke.

"You almost expect to see people here because that's the way it's been all summer, so," said teacher Dan Dennis.

Students kindergarten through 8th grade will arrive in new classrooms designed with white boards running the length of the walls, television projectors, and teacher work stations that can wheel to and from different classrooms.

The gifted learning students program has seen an increase of students which meant more space was needed.

"We are opening our school at full capacity. We have 280 students. We started with 72, then went to 130, and now we're up to 280. So, we see our program is continuing to grow, said Van Dyke.

School supplies sit on desk tops as teachers put make final preparations for the start of school.

Teachers say the first day of school this year will be unique.

"Again, the excitement is just different because of the anticipation of having our own building is great," said Dennis.
