Veterans Memorial to be Dedicated in Chilton

After more than two years of designing, fundraising and building, the Veterans Memorial of Chilton will be dedicated on Saturday.

The community of Chilton has been waiting a long time for its own memorial.

"To finally see it come to fruition is pretty special," said Rich Appel, the chairman of the committee for the Veterans Memorial of Chilton.

Fundraising started in the Spring of 2013.

Committee members raised nearly $200,000.

Partly through selling memorial nameplates to honor both living and deceased veterans.

"I've had Vietnam jungle patrol guys explain how they were able to at the last second get a trip wire off their boot. I've had widows sit in my kitchen and cry," said committee member Donald Kampfer.

The construction started this past spring, which many businesses donated labor and materials for.

Buechel Stone in Chilton contributed all of the stone.

"Part of it is because it's our 50 year anniversary and it's important to the community. It's fun to just be associated with a project like this," explained executive vice president Scott Buechel.

One special feature of the memorial is that there is a statue to represent each branch of the military as well as women who have served.

"Really does take each individual no matter where they served Coast Guard, U.S. Army, Marines, whichever service they were in and it really personalizes it for them," added Appel.

Committee members say it's amazing to see the memorial finished.

"When I saw the Korean Veterans memorial in Washington, I got goose bumps. I get goose bumps when I come up here as well," said Kampfer.

The dedication is Saturday, August 2 at 10 a.m. at Klinkner Memorial Park in Chilton.
