Republican says replacing Common Core standards difficult

Posted: Updated:

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Republican leader of the state Senate says replacing Common Core education standards as Gov. Scott Walker wants will be "difficult."

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said in a statement Friday that while there may be support for repealing current standards, "developing new standards that satisfy everyone's concerns will be much more difficult."

Fitzgerald says he looks forward to talking with Walker about it soon. Walker on Thursday called for replacing the standards.

Senate Education Committee chairman Sen. Luther Olsen says the Legislature should not take local control away from school boards across Wisconsin that have voluntarily decided to adopt the Common Core standards.

Olsen says he wants Walker to explain which of the Common Core standards are insufficient and need to be replaced.
