A Community Hits the Streets for Teen Killed by Suspected Drunk Driver

Township of Scandinavia - This Saturday, July 19, marks two years since 18-year-old Dylan Thorne was killed by a suspected drunk driver just after graduating from Iola-Scandinavia High School. Heather Schmidt, 39, is scheduled to be arraigned later this month on a charge of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle. Thorne's family is holding a motorcycle ride this Sunday in Scandinavia in honor of their son.

"He was an amazing boy. I miss him every day," his mother, Liz Thorne, says.

It's the second year Dylan's mother and close friends are organizing a motorcycle ride in Dylan's honor. They expect 200 people this Sunday from outside the community, as well as Dylan's closest friends.

Dylan's football coach, Scott Erickson, recalled, "He had a big heart, and he had a lot of desire to play the game, and he loved playing football."

That's why proceeds for the ride will go towards new lockers at Thunderbird Field, dedicated in Dylan's name.

"If we ever won the lottery, we'd do something for the community and the football field. So, this project is really important to us," Liz Thorne said.

"It's awesome. It's something that we already dreamed about having at our field," Erickson said.

But the ride isn't just to raise money. The mother of Dylan's best friend organized the event and says it means so much more.

"Get out the awareness about drinking and driving and how it affects everyone, how it's affected my son losing his best friend, how it's affected us and his family," Tina Albers said.

"It hits home a little bit more when it's somebody you know," Erickson added.

Dylan's family says they stay positive as much as possible, saying they've seen changes in the community already and are hoping Sunday's ride will add more people to the growing support system.

The memorial ride starts at Silver Lake Lanes in Scandinavia Sunday morning. Sign-in starts at 8:30 A.M., and the ride starts at 10:30. The cost is $20 per person, $25 per couple, and $5 for each additional rider. There will also be food, music and raffles. Get more details at http://dylanjohnthornememorialride.weebly.com/.
