Prosecutors say at least one of the area's biggest heroin dealers is in custody along with at least nine other suspects in one area's biggest heroin cases of all time.
At least ten suspects were arrested Tuesday and appeared in court Wednesday. The case is so large that it deals with multiple tiers of drug distribution rings in the area and has connections to distributors from Chicago.
"The charges before the court are some of the most significant...what I can say on the record is it is the largest heroin distribution conspiracy that our area has ever been able to identify at this time," said Assistant District Attorney Wendy Lemkuil.
Much of the investigation remains sealed since it is still ongoing. Action 2 News has learned so far that the investigation has been going on for an extended period of time and is being led by the Brown County Drug Task Force. During court proceedings Wednesday, prosecutors identified a suspect in custody as one of the biggest dealers in the area. They said he received heroin from a Chicago source. He was given $150,000 cash bond.
The Chicago source was also arrested and appeared in court Wednesday. Prosecutors claimed he was a "leader and overall source of supply" for heroin in the area. He was given a $250,000 cash bond and faces more than 100 years in prison.
Prosecutors say at least one of the other eight suspects who appeared in court was from the top tiers of drug distribution. Other suspects who appeared in court fell into lower tiers. Prosecutors are trying to hold those arrested on Tuesday in jail for as long as possible because of the ongoing nature of the investigation. Charges Wednesday ranged from Manufacturing and Delivering Heroin to Child Neglect.
More suspects are also expected to be arrested in the near future.
