Wisconsin releases new Medicaid enrollment numbers

Posted: Updated:

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Newly released figures by Gov. Scott Walker's administration show that more than 60 percent of the people who lost state Medicaid coverage earlier this year did not purchase private insurance through the online marketplace.

Walker's Department of Health Services released figures Wednesday. They show that of the nearly 63,000 people who had income above poverty level, roughly 38,000 did not buy federally subsidized insurance through the exchange by the June deadline.

DHS spokeswoman Claire Smith says those people could be without insurance, they could have purchased a private plan not on the exchange, or they could have gotten insurance through an employer or their spouse's employer.

Nearly 25,000 people, or 39 percent of those kicked off Medicaid, purchased a plan through the exchange or subsequently became eligible for Medicaid.
