40 years for baby sitter convicted in infant death

Posted: Updated:

BARABOO, Wis. (AP) - A Sauk County judge has sentenced a baby sitter to 40 years in prison for the death of an infant in her care.

Jeanette Janusiak was convicted of killing 4-month-old Payten Rain Shearer, the daughter of her best friend.

The 27-year-old Reedsburg woman insists she was wrongly convicted. She told Judge Patrick Taggart that she and her family are losing their lives for a life she didn't take. Janusiak accused detectives and prosecutors of twisting evidence to support the theory of her guilt.

The child's mother, Angela Shearer, told the judge that when her daughter died, part of her went with her.

The Baraboo News Republic (http://bit.ly/1mRqQqd ) says District Attorney Kevin Calkins asked for a 75-year sentence. Janusiak's attorney pushed for the minimum 20 years.
