St. Norbert College Prepares for Packers Move In

Updated:
De Pere - Packers training camp starts in less than two weeks, and it's a longstanding tradition for the players to stay in a dorm on St. Norbert College's campus during camp.

The college in De Pere started setting up accommodations Monday with larger than average beds.

Starting next week, you won't find students inside Victor McCormick Hall but Packers.

The dorm rooms will be their home for three weeks.

"This all started 57 years ago when the legendary coach Vince Lombardi decided St. Norbert would be home for the Packers training camp," explained Kelly Nass, the manager of Packers training camp.

But, they won't be sleeping on your standard dorm room mattress.

"Economy movers will move out 225 beds that the students use during the academic school year," added Nass.

Once those beds are out, new ones are brought in along with the frames and assembled in each room.

A process that takes two days.

St. Norbert College brings in the mattresses to keep the Packers as comfortable as possible during training camp.

To give you an idea of the size, the full size mattresses is 84 inches long. That's nine inches longer than the average full size mattress.

"The beds are just custom made to fit a bigger person, so being wide and longer," said Nass.

While the rooms are being set up, campus chefs are preparing menus and getting ready to feed some hearty appetites.

"It's one reason I love St. Norbert and why I keep on staying, just to be able to see the guys. They guys are phenomenal. I get hugs. I've gotten handshakes. They're jovial," said Tracy Stanciu, the lead Packers chef.

The Packers move in on July 24.
