Discarded Puppy Recovering with Help from Foster Mom

Updated:
A 2-week-old puppy left behind a dumpster in Oshkosh on Thursday is now at the Oshkosh Area Humane Society.

She suffers spinal and hip injuries, but her foster mom says she's pushing through.

Sari Soffer visited them to get an update on the pup's road to recovery.

Tawana Hanamann says she hopes for four straight hours of sleep Saturday, but her first priority is caring for the injured pup named Hazel.

"She's still not a weaned puppy, she should still be with her mama, so she's been getting bottle fed every couple hours," said Hanamann, Hazel's foster mom and the medical coordinator at the Oshkosh Area Humane Society.

She says at just two pounds. all they can do is keep her quiet and tend to her daily needs.

"She's a little trooper of a girl," Hanamann says. "She definitely has a lot of spunk and a lot of spirit, and I think that's going to get her far, but we're definitely looking for community support so we can try to get this little girl as much help as we possibly can."

Hazel's examination showed she has a broken pelvis and injured vertebrae on her spine. And she wants to move, but isn't quite able just yet.

Hanamann says "She'll push up and turn, and be like 'ooh shouldn't have done that!'"

Medical procedures would help her mobility, but surgery could cost around $5,000. At that point, they'd reach out for help.

"We really have all of our fingers and toes crossed, and all of our paws cross that we can do what we can with her and that she'll pull through and have a relatively normal life," she adds.

Like any other newborn, it's just sleeping and eating she needs now.

Hanamann is providing that by taking her home each night.

But, considering how well she's doing, says an adopted home could be in Hazel's future.
