Markers Stolen from Veteran Graves in Dodge County

Updated:
Dodge County -

The Dodge County Sheriff says someone stole dozens of brass and bronze markers from the graves of veterans during the 4th of July weekend.

Our sister station WISN in Milwaukee reports more than 40 markers were taken from the Oakwood Cemetery in Beaver Dam. They were yanked out of the ground from the graves of service members who fought in WWI, WWII and Korea.

"Disgraceful. I mean you're not honoring the veterans, it's a disgrace to the veterans," said Russ Kottke, Oakwood Cemetery Manager.

"What they did to these soldiers who fought for our freedoms by degrading their gravesites is... it's just unbelievable," said Sheriff Patricia Ninmann.

The sheriff says the thieves will likely sell the markers as scrap for a few hundred dollars.

The cemetery manger say it will cost several thousand dollars to replace the markers, but plastic markers might be bought to keep them from being stolen.
