Fox Valley Boaters Worried About Weekend on the Water

Updated:
Boaters in the Fox Valley are worried they may be stuck on land this holiday weekend. The Menasha lock is closed after it broke Friday.

The lock allows boaters to travel between Little Lake Buttes des Morts and Lake Winnebago.

Without a way to travel between lakes, many boaters are afraid they may need to make other plans

"This is a real bummer because we're all pretty much land-locked here," said Kevin Lillge of Appleton.

"People are really upset," said Chelsea Spanbauer, Appleton Yacht Club. "Especially on a holiday weekend."

In order for locks to function properly, doors need to be able to open in close. But, after a hinge broke, one of the doors is wedged open.

Officials inspected the door Monday. The same door broke in 2010 because of a broken hinge pin.

"People are understanding but bummed," said Spanbauer. "What are you going to do? You can't go out and buy a part for a lock system at Menards."

Those who were stranded on the other side are docking their boats at nearby marinas and boaters are getting creative making plans for the weekend.

"Boaters--they can figure out ways to get around things and make their own fun," said Jeff Bartsch of Clover, standing near his boat. "They'll work it out, it'll be okay."

"People are bringing their trailers down, um, putting their boats on trailers and then taking them and putting them back in Winnebago," Spanbauer said.

Those without a trailer, like many of the bigger boats, may be out of luck until the lock is open.

Officials have not announced how long the lock will remain closed. Action 2 News will continue to provide updates as they are released.
