East High School Students Heading to Washington D.C. for Parade

Green Bay - Green Bay's East High School marching band is heading to Washington D.C. in less than two weeks to perform in the National Independence Day Parade on July 4th.

On a rainy day of summer school, East High School marching band students are preparing for the opportunity of a lifetime.

"This is going to be amazing. Just a lot of excitement right now," said student Calvin Kanzenbach.

The students are going to perform in the National Independence Day Parade in Washington D.C.

Students found out they were invited to perform more than a year ago.

"It's been hard sometimes because trying to find the money to go and practicing., learning the music," said student Anarosa Martinez.

"We had our pizza fundraisers, our chocolate fundraising. We've just been doing different things out in the community," added student Dantrell Edwards.

It costs $735 for each student.

The band director hoped to get as many of the 135 students as possible to go.

"My fear was that we'd end up at this time of the year and have 25 or 30, but we have 88," said band director Karen Iken.

An estimated $20,000 was raised.

Someone even donated $1500 so they could get new marching shoes since not everyone had a pair.

"I think it's a blessing that people love the music and put in time and effort to support us," said Edwards.

Other preps are starting to fall into place as well.

The band's flag was restored, the uniforms are almost ready to go and the gear is piled up.

The band leaves July 1 and in the meantime will practice its patriotic set list.
