Former News Anchor Charles Gibson Offers Advice to Graduates

Updated:
Lawrence University awarded long-time ABC News Anchor Charles Gibson an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree at the school's commencement ceremony Sunday.

"You don't give these things out capriciously and I truly appreciate it," said Gibson.

He reassured the graduates that a four-year college education is worth the time, money and energy.

And that their experiences will help shape the rest of their lives.

"So, too, were you here for the opportunity to figure out who you are. What do you believe? What will be your value system for the 60 or 70 years you have ahead of you?" Gibson said.

Gibson's television career spanned more than 40 years, including 33 at ABC News, where he was anchor of "World News" and co-anchor of "Good Morning America". Gibson retired in 2009.
