Angels at Bat: Teen Collects Baseball Equipment for Kids in Kenya

Green Bay - While some may spend some of their summer vacation on the baseball diamond, one teen from Green Bay hopes to share his love of the sport with kids in Kenya.

Max Bobholz, 14, says baseball has been a big part of his life since he was 9 years old.

"It's just a place where you can just have fun and just think about whatever you want when you're out there on the field," said Max.

Two years ago he had the idea to create "Angels at Bat," a charity to collect baseball equipment for kids in Africa.

"I saw a team from Uganda come, the first team from Africa in the Little League World Series, and they did a bunch of documentary things on them saying they had such little stuff," explained Max.

"He called me and said, 'Mom you're not going to believe this, there's children from Uganda and they only have one bat,'" added his mother, Julie.

Max is collecting the basics like bats, gloves, helmets and balls.

He and his mother will travel along with a local Rotary Club to Nairobi, Kenya, in August to deliver the donations.

"I think it's going to be a huge life-changer because you don't really see that in Green Bay. You pretty much just see kids having fun with a lot of stuff," said Max.

Max also wants to bring the joy of baseball to children in Kenya as a tribute to his coach who passed away unexpectedly two years ago.

"Max and the coach's son will be writing number 20 -- because that was his softball number -- on every item that will be delivered to Kenya so that his memory continues on," explained Julie.

Max plans to keep Angels at Bat going for as long as he can and is looking for the community's help. A list of what he needs and how to donate can be found at
