State Patrol's Half-squad car/half-taxi wins national ADDY award

A Wisconsin State Patrol car that emphasizes the choices and consequences of drinking and driving has brought home a national award.

The Department of Transportation says the "Choose Your Ride" vehicle, which looks like a State Patrol cruiser and a taxi cab welded together, won second place at the National ADDY Awards -- the Oscars of the advertising industry -- in the category of Public Service - Non-traditional.

The Choose Your Ride vehicle won gold ADDY awards in regional competitions in Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Madison before winning the silver ADDY at the American Advertising Federation competition May 30th.

Action 2 News profiled the Choose Your Ride vehicle last October when it made a local appearance ahead of a Green Bay Packers game. It's actually a high-mileage patrol cruiser. Instead of putting it up for auction, the State Patrol used $1,700 in federal money to apply a taxicab design to the back of the squad car.

It's taken to events around the state encouraging people to think twice when they drink: Do they want to ride in a taxi that will take them home, or in a squad car that will take them to jail?

DOT Bureau of Transportation Safety director David Pabst said, "Based on public reaction and now the national ADDY award, we feel that the Choose Your Ride vehicle is a memorable way to remind drivers about the expense of drunken driving and the benefit of using alternative transportation if they're impaired."
