2 Your Health: Learning a Second Language Boosts Brain Power

Updated:

New research shows learning a second language, even as an adult, can have a positive effect on the brain.

Researchers in Scotland looked at more than 800 people. Some of them learned a second language before the age of 18, some learned it after that.

They found both groups had improvements in general intelligence and reading skills.

Previous studies have also found that being bilingual could delay the onset of dementia.

Researchers say learning a second language is almost like an exercise for the brain.

A new study says the number of teens exposed to e-cigarette ads has skyrocketed, increasing the likelihood that they'll try smoking.

Ads for traditional cigarettes have been banned from TV since 1971, but not e-cig ads.

Researchers found youth exposure to e-cig ads increased by more than 250 percent from 2011 to 2013.

The study says the cable network AMC aired the most e-cigarette advertising, followed by CMT.

The FDA recently proposed new rules for e-cigs, but marketing and advertising restrictions are not part of those rules.
