New babies born at Zoo Miami

Posted: Updated:
MIAMI, FL (WFLA) - Zoo Miami is showing off its latest cuteness as it welcomes three newborns.

First, a baby black rhinoceros was born on Sunday. The newborn female calf weighed 122 pounds. The 14-year-old mother, named Circe, was also born at Zoo Mimi in 2006. The father, Eddie, is also 14 and was born at the Cincinnati Zoo.

This is the 13th successful birth at the Zoo for this highly endangered species, as they continue to be poached in Africa. There is believed to only be about 5,000 left roaming around. They're killed for their horns which are prized in some eastern cultures.

Next, a baby white-faced saki money was birthed on Friday. This was the first of this species to be born at Zoo Miami. These monkeys are found in the rainforest trees of Brazil, Guyana, and Venezuela, and rarely come to the ground.

Unfortunately, the first-time mother rejected the baby monkey so he is now being hand raised by zoo staff.

Lastly, a male Somali wild ass was born on Monday. This species - the last remaining ancestor of the modern donkey - is the world’s most critically endangered asses with less than 1,000 believed to still exist in the wild. The newborn Somali wild ass should be on exhibit by the end of this week.

However, the black rhino will remain with its mother off exhibit for at least a week and the white faced saki is being hand raised by staff and off exhibit for at least the next several weeks.
