Businesses Preparing for Monroe Avenue Construction

Green Bay - Businesses along Monroe Avenue dealt with minor construction last year, but with the busy road closing to traffic Thursday, some are bracing for the worst.

"This area is going to be a mess for awhile," said Tony Kalous, the district manager of A&W.

Kalous says customers will still have access to the store on Chicago Street, but he's still a little worried.

"Our area here is going to be very good, but it's going to be how many people are just going to avoid the area completely to not have to deal with it," he said.

Some businesses say the issue with this project is that it's going to last all summer, and that's the peak sales season.

"A&W is known for a root beer float and for our ice cream and hot dogs. For us to lose the summer months in this location is going to hurt a little bit," added Kalous.

The owner of Aster Park Floral says he sells a lot of outdoor garden accessories in the summer, and the construction is going to block his main source of advertising.

"Our advertising budget is pretty much spent on the outside with statue ware, and it draws people to stop to see the different items," explained Joe Dekeyser.

The shop doesn't expect the construction to hurt its bottom line.

Meanwhile, A&W is already cutting back on food orders just in case.

Both say despite the inconvenience, they believe the new road will be worth it.
