UPDATE-4: Monroe Ave. in Green Bay Closed for Construction

Updated:
Monroe Ave. in downtown Green Bay closed to traffic Thursday for work on a major construction project.

All lanes of Monroe Avenue between Chicago Street and Main Street will be closed until October.

Also, Monroe Avenue will be down to one lane in each direction from Cass to Chicago Streets, which is under the Mason Street Bridge, and from Main Street to the East River.

Green Bay Metro bus stops are being relocated outside the construction area.

The $5.2 million project includes replacing concrete pavement, sidewalks and storm sewers.

Police say the closure has caused a number of traffic-related issues, like drivers going in the wrong direction on one-way streets.

"We have quite a few one-way streets downtown, so this is not uncommon for us to see it, but we're seeing a lot more today because of Monroe Avenue being such a main thoroughfare. People are not understanding the proper detour, so they're going the wrong way down the one-way streets," Lieutenant Jeff Brester said.

Here is a list of detours from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation:
  • WIS  57 northbound – WIS 32/57 to WIS 32 to County  HH/Vanderperren Way to WIS 172 to I43 to WIS 54/57.
