When you're heading out to dinner or shopping, do you keep track of how much you spend?

If you're paying with plastic instead of cash, it can be easy to get carried away.

Action 2 News This Morning checked out some apps for your phone or tablet that can make it easy to track spending.

Mint.com App

Two million people use their free money-tracking app.

You can add every account you have, from bank accounts to credit cards, it lets you see all your accounts in one place.

It's a budgeting tool that sets up a starter budget for you. If you spend more than you've budgeted you can set it up to get an email or text.

mvelopes App

mvelopes is a modern version of the envelope system where you put money in different envelopes for different categories.

This app promises to help you live within your means, save a thousand dollars in an emergency fund, and help you stop living paycheck-to- paycheck.

Named best for over-spenders by Kiplingers, the idea is when there's no money left, you stop spending in that category, or you have to pull money from another envelope.

Level Money App

One of the co-founders of this app said it's the digital equivalent of opening up your wallet and seeing how much you have left.

On the first of each month it fills up your estimated income, and automatically subtracts your recurring bills and savings rate.

The money that's left is what you can spend, and breaks that down on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

You can link to app to all of your credit, debit and banking accounts so it knows every time you make a transaction and adjusts the money.

You get a snapshot of your monthly spending and every time you swipe a card, the transaction is automatically categorized.

It even searches the web for coupons that will save you money based on your spending patterns.
