Local K9 Teams Awarded at WBAY Pet Expo

Four Northeast Wisconsin K9 officers were recognized at the WBAY Pet Expo for their extraordinary crime fighting.

K9 teams from Green Bay, Brown County and Shawano County law enforcement agencies earned awards at the WBAY Pet Expo Sunday for catching criminals and spotting illegal drugs.

Brown County Sheriff Deputy Zachary Roush is one of the officers recognized for an incident one year ago.

He says his K9 partner "Racky" helped him during a domestic disturbance call capturing a person wanted by Green Bay Police.

"The person had buried themselves in probably two to three foot of insulation way in the back far corner of the attic..and he was able to engage that person, at that point. And, even after the engagement, the person refused to give up," he said.

Other officers like Brad Dernbach and his K9, Pal, helped get illegal drugs off the streets.

"Multiple narcotics investigators looked through a trailer...wasn't able to locate any drugs.. And I had myself and my partner K9 "pal" search the same trailer and K9 "pal" was able to locate about $1500 worth of crack cocaine inside the trailer." Dernbach, a Brown County Sheriff's office K9 handler, said.

The officers say this recognition is a testament to the training they do with their K9s every day.

"If it weren't for you and the dog and the training that you gave the dog that you know, you probably wouldn't of located that person and, that person would have still of been out in the community, so it's kind of rewarding," Roush, said.
