Angie's List: It's Never Too Late to Take Up Music and Dance

Updated:

It's never too late to start taking music or dance lessons.  The experts at Angie's List say lessons are a great way to challenge yourself, have fun, meet new people, and develop a new hobby.

"We have a lot of adult students that come in and they are nervous at first because they've never taken a dance class before," said Stefanie Squint, dance instructor. "They've never stepped inside a dance studio, but it's something they wish they would have done when they were younger. I just always say, 'Come in and try it, just one time.'"

Dancing can lift your spirits, no matter your age. Experts say playing an instrument can do that, too.

"I recently took up piano lessons," said Angie Hicks, founder of Angie's List. "We've had a piano in my house for years and it's been really fun. It's always fun to learn something new. My husband plays and my kids play and it's created a little family competition with my kids and I."

Angie's List says you should make sure you like the hobby before spending too much.

"Try some trial classes. Rent your equipment instead of buying it, so you can find out it's the right investment, so you don't end up spending a ton of money," said Angie.

No matter what kind of lessons you want to take, make sure you check the credentials of the instructor before you choose one.

Angie's List says in general, a good age for kids to start piano is five or six. If they're interested in wind or brass instruments, start a little later, like seven or eight.
