Green Bay City Council Approves Contribution To Meyer Theater's Expansion

Updated:

Tonight the Green Bay City Council approves a $300,000 donation to the $3-million dollar Meyer Theatre expansion in Downtown Green Bay.

It's less than the $500,000 the Meyer's board initially asked for but it's not often that the city gives "tax increment financing" or "TIF" to a non-profit.

The city is financially involved in more than a dozen downtown projects, all of them income generating for the city.

Because the Meyer Theatre is a non-profit, it doesn't bring in tax dollars.

So when Alderman Nicholsen asked:

"How long will the TIF be paid back?"

The answer was, it won't.

Which is, in part, why some members of city council believe the half a million dollars the Meyer Theatre asked for, is just too much to give.

"There are significant needs and opportunity in that area for some infrastructure things that this TIF money could be going for," says Alderman Tom Sladek.

But other's also expressed that expanding the Meyer Theater will draw more tax-paying businesses to the area.

Alderman Joe Moore proposed donating a lesser amount.

"That we offer 50-thousand dollars per year in TIF assistance with a 50-thousand dollar add-on for the build out of the second floor," says Moore.

Totaling 300-thousand dollars over the next five years.

This was approved by the city council 11 to 1.

"The city could have easily said 'No, I'm sorry we have other priorities and there's a lot of other organizations out there that need assistance'.  The fact that 10% of that corner is funded by our community leaders and public dollars, we're very happy about tonight's outcome," says Jeff Mirkes, President of the Meyer Theater's Board.

They hope to begin construction in the spring.
