Fox Valley Suicide Prevention Movie Released - WBAY

Fox Valley Suicide Prevention Movie Released

Updated:
Kaukauna -

A special screening of a movie on suicide prevention filmed in the Fox Valley was held Tuesday night

It puts a local face on a very serious issue.

Showcasing real stories, this latest suicide prevention movie has a Fox Valley cast.

It's called, "If You Only Knew What You Left Behind," and it's up on YouTube for viewing.

Promoters say their goal is to start a conversation.

"They're going to see real people, everyday people who have been effected by suicide. They're going to see law enforcement talk about it's impact, the coroner, mental health professionals talk about what they have to go through, and everyday people who have lost someone to suicide," said Barb Bigalke, Executive Director of the Center for Suicide Awareness in Kaukauna.

Many of the people who participated in the movie attended a screening at the Kaukauna Public Library.

This included Mike Hopfensperger, who lost a son to suicide ten years ago.

"A lot of times suicide people think they're either drug addicts or alcoholics, but our son was none of that. He just had a great job a good future, but for some reason the day he died there was too much pain, he had to get rid of it, and that's how he got rid of it," said Hopfensperger.

Filming started last September and wrapped up in January, featuring locations across the Fox Valley. It was funded entirely through donations.

The target audience is middle school age on up, and the hope is the movie will be shown in schools.

Bigalke said, "It really is a message of hope, and if your struggling, people care, we want to help and ask for help."

Those seeking help can contact the Center for Suicide Awareness at www.centerforsuicideawareness.org or call the national crisis hotline at 1-800-273-talk.
