Door County's Holiday Music Motel Hosting Musicians Nationwide

Updated:
Sturgeon Bay, WI -

Dozens of musicians tune up for a final love-themed performance Saturday in Door County.

For the past week, they've taken over the Holiday Music Motel in Sturgeon Bay, which in the past few years has renovated and transformed into rooms of creativity.

"There just isn't anything with this kind of heart where people are truly coming in for just the experience of creating something out of nothing," one of the hotel owners said who goes by melaniejane.

Three weeks out of the year musicians from all across the country gather for a week-long retreat.

This week they're writing and recording original love songs.

"What they do at dinner, well after dinner, is they spin the bottle and randomly get paired up with two other song-writing partners," melaniejane said. "So it's always groups of three. And then in hours they go and write and record a song, come back the next night, we have dinner and then we listen to the tracks that were recorded the previous nights."

At the end of the week, musicians perform their songs publicly for the first time.

Saturday night's concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Third Avenue Playhouse in Sturgeon Bay.

The motel also plays its original songs on a radio station.

"The whole idea of this place is just not to be a for-profit motel," melaniejane said. "It's really a mission to contribute to the community to draw more artists and musicians here."
