Village of Howard Considers Big Box Store

Howard -

Leaders for the Village of Howard say they're in talks to bring a big box store to their area.  One name mentioned by village leaders is Meijer, a Michigan based retailer.

But the big box store is just one of several projects village leaders are working on to keep the area growing.

"We're pretty optimistic next year is going to be a lot of fun," said Village of Howard President Burt R. McIntyre.

According to the U.S. Census the Village of Howard grew more than 28% between 2000 and 2010.  McIntyre Says he believes adding businesses between Howard and Hobart will keep that momentum.

"The 41/29 project makes it even more exciting simply because it's going to open up an infrastructure. I personally believe Highway 29 is going to be a very large commercial development area," said McIntyre.

The village invested in 68 acres of Spring Green Park where they plan to add at least 50 new homes.

THey've also looked at developing near Duck Creek Quarry.

"This is going to be a mixed development. It's going to be both commercial and residential. It's going to be like town houses, condos, and it's going to be focused really around the quarries that we have," said McIntyre.

Plans are also taking shape in developing a village hub near Howard's YMCA.

"It's going to be living, it's going to be stores, it's going to be recreational areas, and it is going to be a gathering area for community events and things like that," said McIntyre.

Village leaders hope it all falls into place within the next five years.
