Angie's List Report: The Pros and Cons of Wallpaper

Updated:

Wallpaper has faded in popularity, but it is making a comeback.

The experts at Angie's List have some tips on how to choose the best wallpaper for your home.

Interior design experts say wallpaper can bring colors, textures, and patterns to a room that a coat of paint never could.

If you do decide to add wallpaper, know that it's tough to work with, so it may not be a do-it-yourself kind of job.

"If you don't like tedious stuff, you want to stay out of the stripping business," says Jim Stevens, wallpaper contractor. "Hanging wallpaper is a tedious process too. A lot of times you get what you pay for. A professional will put it up right and take it off right, too."

The most common wallpaper types are vinyl and fabric.

"A lot of wallpaper is made with vinyl coatings, to make it easier to clean," says Susan Colvin, Interior Designer. "Not all wallpapers are that way, but a lot of wallpaper you can actually wash down fairly well. So, they are a little easier to maintain than perhaps some paint."

Angie's List says these days, more wallpapers are being made with natural fibers for a different look.

Wallpaper prices vary: One roll can cost anywhere from $10 to $100--possibly more.
