Annual Walk Across Frozen Lake Winnebago Raises Money for Animals

Updated:
Lake Winnebago -

Hundreds of people spent their Saturday walking across Lake Winnebago.

Participants started the journey Saturday morning in Hilbert and marched 8.5 miles across the frozen lake to Neenah.

The annual event originally started in 2003, but was canceled the last two years because of poor ice conditions.

This year, the ice wasn't an issue thanks to one of the coldest January's in recent memory.

"We can say we walked across lake Winnebago. Who can say that?" says participant Renee Neumeyer.

Julie Frazier adds "It was amazing. At one point I was like, 'Oh my gosh we're on the water,' and no fear of going through the water because you know the ice is so thick. It's amazing we're walking on the lake."

Funds raised from Saturday's event will benefit the Neenah Animal Shelter and the City of Menasha Police Department's K-9 program.
