Silver Cliff Creates Emergency Plan for Propane Shortage

Updated:
Silver Cliff -

Leaders of a Marinette County community, Silver Cliff, held a town hall meeting Saturday to create an emergency plan for the town.

Deanna Farley is among a couple dozen residents preparing to help neighbors as there's a limited supply of propane in this community of roughly 500 people.

"It's bad. I work in the area and you hear it every day. There are people that are down to 5 percent, 10 percent and with this cold weather coming up, they're going to be out, Farley said.

Town of Silver Cliff leaders wanted to be pro-active.

So, they called this meeting to make sure everyone is accounted for, especially those who may not have enough propane for hot water or heating their homes.

"They want everyone to check on their neighbors...because you can't call everyone. Make sure they're ok," Farley said.

"I have plenty of fuel. But, there's a lot of the neighbors don't," Chuck Cable of Silver Cliff, said. "You've got everything going to freeze up. And, so you got to kind of keep an eye on stuff."

Silver cliff leaders plan to set up a 24-hour shelter at the fire department and make it available until further notice.

"We'll have cots. We're asking people to bring their own blankets and that. And, our auxiliaries and that will have lunch and beverages," Henry Burkel, Silver Cliff Town Chairman, said.

The Director of Emergency Management in Marinette County says there currently isn't a need for help from the Red Cross shelters in the county.

"Establishing shelters, that's going to be based on the numbers of people that are needing lodging or needing an alternate place to go. At the current time, we are not aware of people who are in that position," Eric Burmeister, Director of Emergency Management in Marinette County, said.

With no end in sight for the propane shortage, even places like the Silver Cliff Town Hall need to conserve propane and plan to close doors temporarily next week.
