Medical Center in Algoma Kicks Off New Fitness Initiative

Algoma residents have some new options to get fit starting this week.

Ministry Door County Medical Center is offering classes for free at several facilities as part of a new wellness initiative.

This program is just the start with more in the works to create a healthier community.

Zumba and yoga instructor Shannon Cole wants people to know that fitness can be fun.

"It's important to get people moving, especially this time of year," said Cole.

That's why she is teamed up with Ministry Door County Medical Center for "Let's Go Algoma!"offering free zumba and yoga classes at her studio for eight weeks.

"You do everything at your own pace. I push that in my classes. Listen to your body. You only have one, so make sure you take care of it," explained Cole.

The goal of this program is to raise awareness about health and fitness in the entire community and inspire more people to get involved. So far, it's had an overwhelming response.

"These classes have sold out already and we've kind of proven it's a big need in this town. So, if we can get Ministry and the Y together, maybe we can get a facility here or something like that, take the next step," said Dr. Nate Hayes.

Those participating agree and say the community needs more opportunities like this.

"We're hoping Ministry sees we're really committed in this community for wellness things we just need more facilities and more offerings," said Marge Rodrian.

A second phase of "Let's Go Algoma!" is already in the works so more people can participate.

Ministry Door County Medical Center is looking into bringing a similar program to other communities in Door County.
