Bicyclists Ride on New Years for Safety Education

Fox Valley -

A common New Year's resolution is to get more exercise.  A Fox Valley group of people has not only vowed to be more active by bicycling, but they're taking to the roads to show others that biking can be done 365-days a year.

It may be below freezing today, but that isn't stopping more than a dozen bicyclists in the Fox Valley from hitting the road.  The group is geared up for the third Fox Cities Cycling Association's Resolution Ride.

"It's a beautiful day for a ride," says Katie Masak.  "Every day is a beautiful day in Wisconsin."

They've bundled up to battle the elements for something they enjoy, not just today, but for many all year round.

Cyclist John Victor says, "Biking for me is a passion.  I've been involved in a cycling for the last 25 years in a roundabout way.  I do a lot of local rides, I do a lot of state rides and I know a lot of riding people out there and I want to give them as much support as I can."

And by being out here today, in a big group, in bright colors with all of their safety equipment like helmets and flashing lights, the cyclists are hoping to send a message to motorists that bicycling isn't just a spring and summer activity.  It has really turned into a year round activity and drivers should always be looking for cyclists on the roadways.

President of the Fox Cities Cycling Association, Rob Gusky says, "Just to let people know that even though it's cold outside there's still cyclists and to be looking out for us as we're riding around.  If people can think about, hey there are cyclists even though it's cold, just take an extra second to lookout for each other."
