Angie's List: Should You Tip Service Providers During the Holidays?

Updated:

It's a question some people have when the holidays roll around: should you tip your service providers?

The experts at Angie's List says it's pretty common to give your hair stylist a special holiday tip, but what about contractors who work on your home, like a handyman, house cleaner, or landscaper?

"I would say maybe a quarter-to-a-half of our business that gives us, either my company or my workers tips," said Ryan Curry, landscaper. "It's not expected necessarily, but we always appreciate it."

Angie's List says you should remember a tip doesn't always have to mean cash.

"For example, I think one of the most powerful ways to say thank you to a provider to write a nice letter to their company telling them what great service they provided to you throughout the year," says Angie Hicks, Founder of Angie's List.

"Tips come in many different forms," said Curry. "I've had customers cook us dinner, we've been given sports tickets."

So just how much should you tip?

Angie's List broke it down:

  • Yard Workers: 20 to 50 dollars depending on how often they come to your home.
  • House cleaners: 25 to 50 dollars
  • Child care providers: a gift from your kids, and one or two days pay.
  • The Post Office frowns on tips for your postal worker, but says if you give one it should be 20 dollars or less.
