Cautions Issued Over Holiday Gift Cards

Posted: Updated:

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Wisconsin consumer protection officials want people purchasing gift cards this holiday season to make sure they get their money's worth.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says to be wary of gift card offers that seem to be too good to be true.

Sandy Chalmers, a division administrator with DATCP, says gift card scams include using social media or placing phone calls using receipt of a gift card as a ploy to get money or personal banking information.

DATCP recommends buying gift cards directly from a retailer or an authorized merchant, inspecting the packaging of a gift card to make sure no protective stickers have been removed, and reading the fine print to understand all of the card's rules on usage and associated fees.
