Despite Raises, UW Faculty Salaries Still Lag

Posted: Updated:

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (AP) - Recent pay figures show that professors in the University of Wisconsin System generally earn less than they could at comparable universities.

A Gannett Wisconsin Media report says the figures underscore the challenge of attracting and retaining the best professors.

For example, full professors at UW-Madison had an average salary of $106,200 last year. The median salary among 11 similar schools was $134,500.

Devinder Sandhu teaches biology at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. His base salary is listed at $68,000, but he says he gets offers that would pay $93,000 or more.

UW has been pushing the Legislature for more control and flexibility to set competitive salaries.

The UW System has given out more than $9 million in raises over the past three school years, but the amount falls each year.
