Green Bay Prepares For New Trash Collection Plan

Green Bay -

In the City of Green Bay if you haven't received one of these garbage carts, they will soon be arriving at your home.

As a part of the city's new budget plan-- automated trash collection will begin at the start of the year.

More than 40,000 96 gallon trash carts will be distributed in Green Bay by July.

Automated trash collection will begin in January and will expand to more areas in March, and July.

Those who are getting trash carts now, will start using them the week of January 6th.

"That's when people can start putting them out to the street. You can't put them out before, we won't collect them because the trucks are coming in very shortly, so we need the trucks in order to tip them," said Chris Pirlot, Operations Manager at the Department of Public Works.

The trash carts cost $60 a piece and will be paid for in two $30 payments on Green Bay residents' 2013 and 2014 property tax bills.

People have the option of trading their cart in for something smaller, but the price remains the same.

With new trash carts starting to arrive in front of homes across the City of Green Bay, the Department of Public Works says they've taken a good look at our city ordinances and they are hoping to be a little more flexible on where people can store these new garbage carts.

"We re-wrote it to be a little bit loose, but not totally free for all. Basically what it says is the cart needs to be out of general eyesight of passers by," said Pirlot.

The city is getting thousands of calls about this transition in trash pick-up.

They say many of the answers can be found inside information packets attached to each trash cart.
