Mental Health Center Finally Coming Down

Updated:

After decades of debate about its future, and more than four years sitting vacant, the old Brown County Mental Health Center is finally being demolished.

The facility sits on 200-acres of county owned land on Green Bay's east side, along St. Anthony Drive.

Even though it's been vacant since the fall of 2009, it's been a drain on taxpayers.

"Yes it was costing us money to continue to have this building sitting here," says Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach.

Brown County Supervisor Bernie Erickson estimate it's cost the county more than $100,000 dollars a year to maintain the vacant facility

"We finally said enough is enough and we shut everything down and we said it's coming down.," says Erickson.

Over the last four months, crews have stripped the building for salvage and recycling.

Because of that, the demolition cost is expected to drop from two million dollars to $500,000.

The project manager expects it will take four weeks to tear the facility down.

After that the county highway department will crush the rubble and turn it into gravel.

"Come spring, once the ground in thawed, we'll be back-filling and re-grading whatever has been disturbed, we'll reseed it so it becomes basically a green field, what you would see here would be a lawn," says Brown County Facilities Engineer Doug Marsh.

It's then, the County Executive says, the property will be targeted for economic development and job creation.

"Really in the long-term, when we look at this overall property, we have the opportunity to take a look at 200 acres of land that Brown County owns," says Streckenbach.

Construction of a veterans housing facility has already been approved.

The next goal is to establish a business-technology park.

"Over the next ten years we're going to see rapid growth coming and it makes for a great tax base for not only the county, but the city and Green Bay schools, so we're very, very pleased," says Erickson.
