Door County Race to Host USA Track & Field Championship

Door County, WI -

National elite runners will descend upon Door County next fall.

The Fall 50 will host USA Track and Field's 50 Mile Road Championship run.

The course starts at the top of the Door County peninsula in Gills Rock.

Runners will make their way, all 50 miles, down to Sturgeon Bay.

Fall 50 organizers were bidding against the Tussey Mountainback Relay in Pennsylvania to host the event.

"If you win this, you're the national champion," Sean Ryan said, race director for the Fall 50, which began in 2006.

Ryan estimates 200 runners will participate in the solo run.

A relay is also hosted, but not affiliated with USA Track and Field.

"By comparison to other types of running events, it seems small, but when you take in the magnitude of how far they're running, it's a big deal to have 200 people running 50 miles," he said.

Tourism leaders say a national audience is key to the county's economy.

"Typically what we see is the further people come to Door County, they longer they tend to say," Jon Jarosh said, director of communications and public relations for the Door County Visitor Bureau. "It's just a great opportunity for us to roll out the welcome mat for people who have never been to Door County before."

Anyone can register to run in the championship event.

Ryan expects nationally-ranked ultra runners from mountain states to do well.

"You can sign up," he said. "That's the amazing thing. You can sign up and run in a national championship, and you're eligible to win. The reality is a lot of those people out there have been doing this for a long time."

Registration opens April 1.

The Fall 50 is scheduled Saturday, October 25.
