Jacksonport Turns Out for Annual Parade

Jacksonport -

The Jacksonport Thanksgiving Day parade is an annual right of passage, an event that not only entertains, but also helps a family in need.

For 17 years on Thanksgiving Day, the citizens of Jacksonport have decorated their tractors, put on funny outfits and prepared to entertain a crowd. The annual Thanksgiving Day Parade is a can't miss event, even in chilly temperatures and snow.

"This is a good day," says Jeff Taylor a parade participant. "It's nice and warm and it's not 14 below like some years. And I think it's going to be a good turnout. People love doing this and we call it the little parade that could."

Since its inception, the parade has not only entertained with creative and homemade floats, but it's also helped a local family in need. This year is no different as buckets were circulated and cash was collected. All proceeds are going to five year old Cruz Anshutz and his family.

Anshutz mom Robin says, "He was diagnosed with retinoblastoma a year ago, actually this week, and we've been traveling back and forth to Philadelphia for the last year every month and we got good news in August that it's almost gone."

And while helping others and giving thanks is really the purpose of the parade, parade organizers changed the start time to make sure there was enough support here for Cruz and his family as well as the Packers when they kicked off at 11:30."

"We didn't want the Packer game to interfere with our ability to raise money for a family in need, so we moved the time up," says Jill Lautenbach, spokeswoman of the parade.

And the earlier start certainly didn't take away from the turnout or the crowds generosity.

Adds Mark Huber, "This is our first Thanksgiving in our new home here and we couldn't miss it. It's a one of a kind nationally and we're just so thrilled to be here and be part of the celebration and help raise some money for a little boy."
