Hunters Boost Small Town Business - WBAY

Hunters Boost Small Town Business

Updated:

With fewer than one thousand residents, the Village of Crivitz is small.

But during the gun deer season, it becomes much, much larger than that.

"The guys are on vacation, everybody's coming up, it's something they've been doing all their lives, it's a tradition," says Nick Witt, owner of the Piggly Wiggly on US 141 in Crivitz.

The lines at the registers of the Piggly Wiggly were full of hunters stocking up for opening weekend.

"We're selling ammunition, we're selling rifles, we're selling the beer, we're selling the booze," says Witt.

This is a boost to sales that's not only nice, but needed.

"It helps the entire community, we're dependent on tourism here in Crivitz, this is the last push before snowmobile season," says Witt.

The Piggly Wiggly's success is shared with other local businesses in Crivitz.

"We're annually booked at the motel for our opening three days of gun season, there's a slight waiting risk to get into our resort," says Mark Shaffer of Shaffer Park Resort.

Shaffer says the revenue brought in Friday, Saturday and Sunday equals an entire week of peak camping season in July.

"It's very needed going into winter it's our last boost of sales before the long winter," says Shaffer.

This makes the weekend one not only hunters can look forward to.
