Colton's Legacy: Helping Other Families with Childhood Cancer

Updated:

This weekend the family of Colton Steinhorst will take a swing at keeping his legacy alive.

Last month Target 2 On Assignment shared his family's story and the experimental transplant the four-year-old underwent with his mom trying to fight his cancer.

Three weeks ago, Colton died.

But his spirit is being kept alive in a foundation created a year ago.

When Colton was in remission last September, Colton's Cure Foundation was created to help other families in Wisconsin battling childhood cancer.

"The amount of strength she has is just amazing," Michelle Whittemore said, a friend of Colton's mom Tara and member of the non-profit's board.

The foundation's first golf outing last year at Mid Vallee Golf Course raised about $16,000.

All of it is going to Wisconsin families.

"Throughout the last year, Colton has touched so many people's lives and changed so many people's lives," Heather Herbst said, another friend and board member.

Saturday dozens of teams will tee off for the 2nd annual event.

There's no question, Colton's family says, the event should continue even three weeks after his death.

"It's going to be great," Colton's mom Tara said wiping away tears. "It just means I've done something right as a parent, and we've done something right as a family to spread the word to help others."
