With storms and changing seasons, Northeast Wisconsin can be tough on the siding of your home.
The experts at Angie's List have some tips on making your home's siding last through the years.
Angie's List says many of us think of siding as only something cosmetic, but experts say it offers important protection to your home's structure and everything in it.
Putting new siding on a home can be a big project, and as a homeowner, you should be specific with your contractor about what you want.
"The first samples he brought us were close, but not what we wanted," said Judy Hartley, Homeowner. "We kept describing it. He went completely out to another vendor and found the exact color and brought it to us, and then they let us keep a sample so that we could see it in different lights to be sure that was exactly what we wanted."
Angie's List says when you order new siding, get a few extra pieces so you could replace some if they're damaged by weather.
Experts say there are different materials to choose from--wood, vinyl and fiber-cement are the most popular. Aluminum and composite are also options.
The right siding job can totally change the look of your home.
"We really love it," said Hartley. "Our neighbors, of course, are all glad that we did it. There was a total stranger riding by on a bike one day and he said you have the most beautiful house in the neighborhood, so that made us feel good."
Angie's List says siding manufacturers can be very specific on how the product should be installed.
If it's not installed right, you could void your warranty.
