Panel suggests term limits for Wis. Supreme Court

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A special task force of attorneys recommends limiting Wisconsin Supreme Court justices to a single 16-year term.

The state Bar of Wisconsin panel says the move could help restore public confidence in a court beset by increasingly confrontational political campaigns.

A Wisconsin State Journal report (http://bit.ly/10rCcGv ) says the panel wants a constitutional amendment introduced this fall to change the system. Currently there's no limit to the number of 10-year terms a justice can seek.

Joe Troy is a former circuit judge whose 18-month study resulted in the proposal. He says campaigns have become brutal, with the incumbent and challenger attacked and demeaned so much that voters think all the justices are mediocre.

Republican lawmakers weren't available for immediate comment but Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chris Larson calls the plan promising.
