Report: One-Third of Seniors Have Alzheimer's or Dementia at Death

Updated:

A new report shows a third of seniors have Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia at the time of their death.

The report from the Alzheimer's Association shows that in many cases, dementia is the cause of death.

The report says deaths related to Alzheimer's disease rose 68 percent from 2000 to 2010.

At the same time, deaths from other major diseases like heart disease and AIDS have dropped.

The report also says Alzheimer's takes a major toll on people caring for those with the disease. In 2012, more than 15 million people cared for someone with Alzheimer's.

A new documentary film is taking on the issue called "food insecurity."

"A Place at the Table" focuses on people who don't know where their next meal will come from because they don't have enough money or resources to get food.

The filmmakers say 50 million people, 17 million of them children, fall into this category.

The film also says the obesity problem and food insecurity go hand-in-hand--many poor people don't have access to fruits and vegetables because they don't have cars to get to big grocery stores that carry them.
