As Governor Walker pushes his budget forward to be passed, some Republicans are saying not so fast.
"These programs that are in the budget for vouchers are not acceptable to most of the Republican senators," said Sen. Mike Ellis (R).
The idea to expand the school voucher program has been an ongoing hot topic. Just last week the Green Bay Area school board also expressed concerns over the current proposal.
"There's a lot of concerning things in the budget that really have the potential to have long term devastating consequences to education," said Brenda Warren, President of the school board. "I'm glad to see that some of the senators are starting to think well maybe this isn't what we want to put forward."
While there are various concerns about the voucher program in the senate, there's strong support in the assembly.
"I don't think it will ever pass exactly the same as the Governor recommended it but I'm very optimistic that we're going to continue to make progress and that there are people who really want to give kids a chance at more options," said John Gard of School Choice WI.
Some of those opposed to the current proposal would like to see the voucher program modified.
"I just think it needs more a much longer conversation a much longer discussion between all of the involved parties," said Warren.
"It's important that people have a chance to express themselves but you know I think we got a long way to go," said Gard.
