Sturgeon Bay -
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says Sturgeon Bay's Bayview Bridge closed for repairs at noon Tuesday.
The bridge was scheduled to close Monday, but the DOT says setting up the detour route took longer than expected so they had to delay the closure for a day.
The bridge is a key link to the popular destinations in northern Door County, and will close to traffic for the next four months while crews complete electrical and mechanical upgrades and paint the bridge. The DOT says the work, some of which began last fall, will extend the life of the bridge.
The bridge is also closed to pedestrians.
Drivers will be asked to use the historic Michigan Street Bridge that runs through Sturgeon Bay's business district.
The DOT says drivers will need to plan for extra time to get through Sturgeon Bay, especially during busy times for tourists.
The $4.8 million project is the first major upgrade work to the 35-year-old bridge since 2004.
The Bayview Bridge connects to the northern part of Door County that includes popular tourist spots like Egg Harbor, Fish Creek and Sister Bay.
Officials say the bridge will be closed through Memorial Day weekend but should be open by July 4.
