Door County -

A 13-year-old boy has died after he was hit by a truck while riding his snowmobile.

The door county sheriff's department says the crash happened around 4:30 Friday afternoon on County Road C in the township of Brussels.

The department says 47-year-old Joel Jeanquart was traveling northbound in his truck when it collided with the snowmobile that 13-year-old Brett Buhr was operating.

Buhr was taken to a hospital in Green Bay where he later died.

Jeanquart, on the other hand, wasn't hurt.

Authorities say the 13-year-old was traveling eastbound on a snowmobile trail when he stopped before crossing the road.

They say he then attempted to cross the road and was struck by a northbound truck.

Kelly Routhieaux lives nearby where the crash happened.

She tells Action 2 News she ran outside her home to come to the aid of the victims.

"The family has to lose a child and the rest of the family, a grandchild, a friend, anything else, a brother, whatever, it's horrible," Kelly Routhieaux said.

News of the crash spread quickly today around the community.

Others we talked to are devastated that a boy's life was cut short.

"It's a very sad day in southern door county. There's no doubt about it. We're all going to feel the pain here," Scott George of Little Sturgeon said.

The sheriff's department continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash and say more details could be released on Monday.
