Could Canker Sore Drug be Used for Weight Loss?

Updated:

Researchers have found what could be an unexpected new weight loss drug.

The drug is actually designed to treat canker sores, but researchers found the mice they tested it on ended up losing weight.

The mice got thin without eating less or exercising more.

The drug is called Amlexanox, and it's been on the market for more than 15 years to treat canker sores.

It hasn't been tested as a weight loss drug in humans yet, but researchers expect to begin those tests later this year.

Researchers say we should remember, though, that many drugs that work in mice don't work in people.

A new government report shows teen birth rates have hit a historic low.

The number of babies born early or with a low birth weight has also dropped.

Experts say those statistics go hand-in-hand, since babies born to teens have a greater chance of being premature or underweight.

Researchers say these numbers are dropping because education about teen pregnancy the importance of prenatal care is increasing.
