Tribal Chairman: Lawsuits Not Out of the Question to Stop Mine

Updated:

The Chairman of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa isn't ruling out lawsuits to stop the creation of a mine in Northern Wisconsin.

The comments were made Sunday morning on UpFront with Mike Gousha and after a busy week of public hearings on rallies.

Gogebic Taconite says it will invest $1.5 billion into the project if the legislation is approved.

At Wednesday's 12-hour public hearing in Madison, Gogebic Taconite lobbyist Bob Seitz said state and federal guidelines will protect the environment.

"The critical things will all be protected under this legislation, and all the environmental standards that we have today will be met," he said.

But Bad River Tribal Chairman Mike Wiggins Jr. isn't buying it.

Federal law allows the tribe to regulate water quality standards on its own land.

"We definitely are going to utilize whatever resources are necessary to protect our waterways, our surface water and our groundwater aquifers," Wiggins said on UpFront.

Friday, 12 Assembly lawmakers, both Democrats and Republicans, toured the proposed site.

No other public hearings are scheduled.
