Being Bilingual Could Keep Your Brain Healthy

Updated:

New research shows knowing more than one language could help keep your brain healthy as you age.

Researchers studied more than 100 people who identified themselves as bilingual.

During tests that involved simple working memory, bilinguals and people who speak just one language scored about the same.  But when participants had to switch between intuitive tasks, bilinguals were faster.

Researchers say this may show that bilinguals can be better mental multi-taskers.

A new report shows Americans are dying younger than people in other countries.

The National Research Council found life expectancies in the U.S. are shorter--in some cases years shorter-- than in 27 other high-income countries.

The news comes even though Americans spend more per person on health care than any other country.

Researchers say that may be because Americans know how to make healthy choices, but few actually make them.
